NIMHD supports supplement applications for postdoctoral fellows and/or junior faculty level candidates; investigators are strongly encouraged to contact their parent grant program officer prior to submission.

Diversity supplements may be submitted and will be reviewed throughout the year. Applications received after June 30th will be processed and considered for funding in the next fiscal year (October 1st).

Diversity supplements for center grants that support research subprojects (e.g., U54, P50) must fall within the scope of one or more active subprojects.

NIMHD will allow no more than 2 years of support. At the time of the application, the parent grant should have 2 years or more remaining. Supplements to two-year R03 and R21 grants are not a priority for NIMHD.

Annual Salary Cap for Investigators Developing Independent Research Careers: $75,000 plus fringe benefits. Total costs requested may not exceed $125,000 per year. See terms and conditions in the FOA.

Ola HAWAII

The strategic goal of the Center, named Ola HAWAII, is to grow and support a community of health disparities investigators and collaborators (the “workforce”) to harness the power of diverse thought (the “thinkforce”) to determine the causes of and interventions for health disparities in the Pacific

Ola HAWAII Specific Aims:

Aim 1: Foster and facilitate the conduct of high-impact team-science research addressing health disparities

  1. Support a culturally competent and scientifically rigorous portfolio of R01- and R21-type basic biomedical, behavioral and clinical research projects on health disparities in Hawaii’s vulnerable populations
  2. Foster sustainable institutional collaborations and community partnerships
  3. Promote inter-professional and transdisciplinary research across the UH System capitalizing on the rich diversity of investigators, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds
  4. Promote collaborations and partnerships with other programs at UH and at other RCMI grantee institutions through the RCMI Translational Research Network (RTRN)

Aim 2: Strengthen and diversify the basic biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce and thinkforce focusing on health disparities

  1. Develop a mentoring and career development program of personalized research education for a broad swathe of faculty, including healthcare professionals and community leaders
  2. Provide pilot funding on a competitive basis to new and early-stage investigators to generate preliminary data for NIH grant applications
  3. Identify, grow and nurture the next generation of basic biomedical, behavioral and clinical researchers from underrepresented backgrounds
  4. Partner with communities to understand their health concerns and priorities, to communicate principles of health research ethics, and disseminate newfound knowledge to the community

Eligibility:

NIH encourages institutions to diversity their student and faculty populations to enhance the participation on individuals from groups identified as underrepresented in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral and social sciences, such as:

  1. Individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the National Science Foundation to be underrepresented in health-related sciences;
  2. Individuals with disabilities, who are defined as those with physical and mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities;
